The US donor network led by billionaire industrialist Charles Koch has signalled it will oppose Donald Trump’s bid to secure the 2024 Republican presidential nomination in the latest rift between wealthy conservative backers and the former president.

“The best thing for the country would be to have a president in 2025 who represents a new chapter,” Emily Seidel, chief executive of the network’s political campaign group, Americans for Prosperity, wrote in a statement posted online on Sunday. She added the group would support a candidate in the presidential primary “who can win”.

Announcing AFP’s intention to get involved in more primaries, Seidel said the Republican party was “nominating bad candidates who are advocating for things that go against core American principles. And the American people are rejecting them.” This left Democrats free to respond with “more extreme policies”, Seidel said.

circled什么意思_circled_circled怎么读

The NHS is braced for its biggest strike in recent history on Monday with nurses, ambulance workers and paramedics across England and Wales set to walk out, as the blame game between ministers and unions escalates.

Tens of thousands of nurses backed by the Royal College of Nursing are expected to take part in industrial action across 73 NHS trusts. Nearly 12,000 ambulance workers affiliated with either the GMB or Unite unions will also walk out.

Health unions are calling on the government to re-examine pay recommendations made by the independent pay review body for the current financial year of 2022-23. This saw more than 1mn staff granted a £1,400 pay rise.

France and Germany’s economy ministers will ask the US to lay off making “aggressive” overtures to European companies in a bid to lure their green investments across the Atlantic, French officials said ahead of a visit to Washington this week.

France’s Bruno Le Maire and Germany’s Robert Habeck are due to hold talks with White House officials on Tuesday to underscore EU concerns about President Joe Biden’s landmark climate legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, and push for better co-operation.

The $370bn US package, which contains hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies for green tech, aims to bolster investment in everything from electric carmakers to renewable energy producers. The bill, originally intended to challenge China’s dominance of green tech, is conditioned on manufacturing being local, which has sparked fears that a growing number of businesses considering investments in Europe would pivot to the US instead.

circled怎么读_circled_circled什么意思

After seizing power in 1999, General Pervez Musharraf proclaimed himself Pakistan’s “chief executive”. Over the next decade, he likened himself to a range of historical leaders, including Kemal Atatürk, Napoleon Bonaparte and Abraham Lincoln. He believed he was Pakistan’s saviour, and maintained that only his military approach could rescue the country from a self-serving political establishment.

The general, who has died aged 79, set out to free Pakistan from the “sham democracy” of its civilian elite, and to restore the nation’s economy. During nearly ten years in power between 1999 and 2008, he championed “enlightened moderation”, a term he dreamt up to marry Islam and secularism and justify his rule. But his strategy failed, and he resigned in disgrace in 2008. He spent most of his final years practically confined to his Dubai home, in self-imposed exile.

Musharraf came to power in a bloodless military coup in 1999 that began as he circled over Karachi in a civilian airliner running short of fuel. He had learnt on board that he had been sacked by the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif and would not be allowed to land. But a fellow general took control of the airport, and the army ushered in Pakistan’s fourth era of military rule in the 52 years since its creation.
