最近在美国首都华盛顿(Washington)弗里尔美术馆(Freer Gallery of Art)举行的葛饰北斋作品展以他自己所说的“为画疯狂”(Mad about painting)为题,堪称名副其实。
日本驻美大使衫山晋辅(Shinsuke Sugiyama)在11月的画展开幕式上表示,“这个美术馆是观察亚洲,特别是了解日本的重要窗口。”
弗里尔美术馆举行这次画展是为了庆祝日本主办2020年奥运会(Olympics)和残奥会( Paralympics),画展举行之时恰逢美术馆创始人查尔斯·朗·弗利尔(Charles Lang Freer)去世100周年。
同样重要的是,日本与史密森尼学会(Smithsonian Institution)的国家亚洲艺术博物馆(National Museum of Asian Art)建立了长期的伙伴关系。

葛饰北斋最著名的作品“神奈川海浪“(Great Wave Off the Coast of Kanegawa)并未在弗里尔美术馆展出,但观众可以欣赏其他描绘海浪的作品。
画展的策展人弗兰克·费尔滕(Frank Feltens)说,葛饰北斋具有强烈的创作冲动,对任何笔下表现的东西,不论现实的还是想象的,都怀有难以满足的激情。“葛饰北斋的确是痴迷于绘画的人。”
他具有多方面的才能。他的漫画作品集北斋漫画(Hokusai Manga)已成为重要的经典。北斋漫画收集了描绘日本日常生活的作品,幽默诙谐,发人深省。他甚至还有讲解舞蹈的画作,也被收入这次画展。
葛饰北斋还尝试采用西方绘画风格,结合日本传统技法进行创作。

Hokusai: ‘Mad about painting’ exhibition in Washington

And so the artist gives theapt title to a new exhibitionof his works at the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington.
“This museum is such a window into Asia, especially Japan,” Japan’s Ambassador to the U.S. Shinsuke Sugiyama said at the exhibition opening in November.
The exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of the gallery namesake’s death. It also celebrates the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, which Japan will host.
Equally important is thelongtime partnershipbetween Japan and the Smithsonian Institution’sNational Museum of Asian Art.

Hokusai’s best-known work isGreat Wave Off the Coast of Kanegawa. It is not at the Freer, although other “wave” prints are.
Hokusai was a compulsive painter with “an insatiable urge to paint anything and everything, both real and imagined,” said curator Frank Feltens. “Hokusai truly was a man obsessed by painting.”
And he was versatile. His books of sketches, collectively called theHokusai Manga, are notable treasures. The series depicts daily life in Japan with insight and humor. He even illustrated dance lessons, examples of which are in the exhibition.
Hokusai also experimented with Western art styles. He blended them with traditional Japanese approaches.
He wanted to be a legendary artist, and he became one. But Hokusai criticized his “early” work prior to age 70. He aimed to create works that appeared to miraculously come to life.
Hokusai produced his most famous works between age 70 and his death at 89.
The exhibition continues through November 8, 2020.
