NABUQI

Stay and Occupation

Every displacement of the body involves “staying and occupation.” Whether traveling, visiting and residing or migrating, in exile or wandering, every long or short-term stay ultimately becomes some sort ofoccupation. One’s entry into a space implies changing the habitual dynamics between individuals and their environment, just like an intruder occupies aphysical location, changing its outward appearance while also bringing psychological fluctuations and imbalances. Every time we stop movement, the space we have occupied is not only the terrain under our feet, but also the mental space we share with others. This change does not only occur in one direction: the occupier must also face the tensions of an unfamiliar environment, as well as the impalpable interactions between him or her, the outside world and others.

“Stay and Occupation” — the theme of artist Nabuqi’s residency program at DawanArt in Paris (05/05-31/07) — is on some level a continuation of her perennial interest in the relationship between subject and space, that has further evolved into an exploration about the urbanlandscape. These questions were dominant in her 2015 sculpture solo exhibition Parallel and her installation Strange View participating in the 2016 Shanghai Biennale. Now, Nabuqi has extended her reflection to Paris. Alms cups placed infront of those who are forced to call the street their home, footsteps captured from café terraces, sound clips collected from the noise of Parisian parks — Nabuqi has reconstructed and reconfigured these symbolic objects of “staying and occupation” in this exhibition space, giving form to the intense and ineffable inner movements of a passing guest.

Nabuqi does not seek to pass judgement; her intention is to allow these tensions tohang in space, evoking this description from Julio Cortázar’s short story HouseTaken Over: “We stood listening to the noises, growing more and more sure thatthey were on our side of the oak door, if not the kitchen then the bath, or inthe hall itself atthe turn, almost next to us.”

Nabuqi’s contemplation on the ontology of objects is reflected in her works: objects surrounding us also exist independently of human perception. She puts emphasison the meaninglessness of the objects, as well as the combinations of objects, whereby accentuating their being-ness and embodied energy. They do not exist to serve certain purposes, nor do they only exist in specific spaces.

However, the relationship between these objects is in a constant state of flux. They are always in the process of “placement”, where their interrelationship is adjusted through means of addition and subtraction, this state of fluidity, to prevent these sculptural works from falling into the finality of serving the mere purpose of “occupying space”, and to let them exist more independently and autonomously through traditional methods of presentation.

DawanArt Residency Program in Paris

In 2016 DawanArt started a residency program for Chinese artists in contemporary art. These residences offers the possibility to use an apartment in the center of Paris to dedicate oneself to one’s work for a period of two to three months. During the artist’s residency, DawanArt organizes interviews, “open door” studio visits and anexhibition in order to better connect the artist with the art world, critics and any member of the public interested in France.By sharing our knowledge and reflection on Chinese contemporary art through our careful selection of artists, we aim to showcase the artists’ individual sensibility, his or her creative liberty and also the quality of the artwork itself while working to present vision of Chinese contemporary art in the West departing fromthe established stereotype. Artists XIE Qi and FAN Xi have participated in our residency in 2016, and in 2017 we welcome Na BuQi in the summer and LIU XinYi in the fall.
