这首诗歌的作者存在一些争议，但一般倾向认为本诗为弗莱(Mary Elizabeth Frye,1905-2004)于1932年所作。
当时，有一名德国犹太妇女Margaret Schwarzkopf 寄住在作者的家中。她的母亲在德国身患重病，让她十分担心。不过，由于当时德国反犹气氛浓烈，人们警告她不要回德国。当她的母亲去世后，她伤心欲绝，对作者说自己甚至连“站到母亲墓前哭泣”的机会也没有(“she never had the chance to stand by her mother’s grave and shed a tear”)。Frye深受此事触动，从未写过任何诗作的她在一个纸购物袋上写下了这段诗。

1995年，这首诗在英国出版，获得了空前的关注，也打动了无数人。
2004年，英国《泰晤士报》评论这首诗：“The verse demonstrated a remarkable power to soothe loss. It be-came popular, crossing national boundaries for use on bereavement cards and at fu-nerals regardless of race, religion or social status.”
这首诗在英语国家的葬礼上或是纪念战争的追思会上被广泛朗诵。在美剧《绝望的主妇》中，由Kathryn Joosten 扮演的Karen Mccluskey 也曾朗诵这首诗歌的一部分。
这首诗歌还被译成《化为千风》或《千风之歌》，在包括日本、中国等很多国家广为流传。
诗歌还被改编成英文歌曲“I am a thousand winds”，由著名歌手Hayley Westenra演唱。
