I believe in the second chance

I have traveled millions of miles, given tens of thousands of speeches and heard thousands of voices.

I often started every trip assuming the role of a teacher, with helpful messages and methods to impart, but ended as a student myself, humbled and inspired by the life stories that my dear students are kind enough to share with me.

一开始,我是老师,传递有用信息,讲述有效的方法,但最终也成为了学生;

学生们分享给我的人生故事让我深有感触,备受启发;

I am grateful for their trust.

They told me why they decided to sit for another grueling test even when the dark days of Gaokao are still fresh in memory.

Some did it for love.

“I want to be part of my girl’s future life plan, so that she does not have to worry our relationship will not last”.

Some for independence.

“I don’t want to be arranged a husband and get settled before seeing the bigger world.”

Some out of the desire to provide better life for their families.

And some for the ardent pursuit of academic achievements.

The reasons can go on forever.

The context differs, yet through these confidences I seethe same faithin efforts and education, the same determinationto become a better version of oneself, the same braveryto move forward in spite of setbacks and distractions.

My fellow “KAOYAN REN”, I applaud your incredible strength!

The Postgraduate entrance exam,Kaoyan.

Behind it lies a lot of people’s dreams for a better life.

It’s a second chance that has enabled me to get where I am now.

I believe in second chances.

Without them, people may have to suffer the one and same failure for scores of years and feel trapped by the dozens of old troubles day in and day out.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

People who have the stamina to walk out of ashes and stage a brilliant comeback will be respected and adored, instead of being branded by past defeats.

But second chances like this do not come in volumes.

It may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

It may be the most effective way you would have to alter the course of your career.

It may be the only road that can lead you to cross path with your dream girl or boy.

If we squander this opportunity, then we just have to live within more modest means and with smaller ambitions.

Well, no dreams, get real and settled, just as our time-hardened elders drummed.

My fellow “KAOYAN REN”, silence that drumming, take advantage of the opportunity, because you can dream big and have to dream big.

Give yourdreams a chance to shine.

Students also came to me about their worries and deepest fears.

They posed hypothetical questions that reflect the doubts passed to them by irresponsible others: “What if I fail just like the numerous tests before?” “What if my parents see me as a giant baby depending on them and delaying work?” “Should I try once more?”…

I have great empathy with them.

Fear of failure haunted our imagination before we set out to do anything.

Our brains are wired this way, for better or for worse.

But do not allow these hesitations to grow into emotional chains that bind us and stop us to even try.

Failures are not as intimidating as they seem.

As a matter of fact, past failures contribute to wisdom and success in future for those who are daring enough to look deep and extract lessons.

The greatest achievers are not those who shoot straight A’s and waltz through life from cradle to grave, but those who fail and fail and fail yet rise from the bottom again and again.

My fellow “KAOYAN REN”, cast the doubts off your mind.

Work hard together with me, shed sweat, lose weight, but never the regretful tears for non-action.

My fellow “KAOYAN REN”, don’t let the shame of failure destroy your career and life.

The fruits of KAOYAN consist of not simply good scores or diplomas.

The mindset and good habits you developed would also prime you better for professional opportunities.

A lot of my former students left messages to me, saying that they continue to read my posts and watch me live streaming my hearts out long after the exam.

They thanked me and said the contents benefit them during their doctoral researches or work assignments.

They were able to grasp opportunities denied to colleagues due to superior English skills.

That is the thing about a good education; it is the most loyal companion in the world, once you have it, you will never lose it and it will give you a lift on whatever you do and under whatever circumstances.

My fellow “KAOYAN REN”, I may not be able to promise you a sure result, but I can confirm the efforts you spent. They will not be wasted.

The journey will be difficult. The road will be months long. Challenges and odds await. Yet the final brilliant moments will be yours.

May luck and health stay with you!
