Domestic theaters are facing a slowdown this week. After the torrent of new blockbusters earlier this month, few new major movies were released in the past week as most studios are waiting for the lucrative National Day holiday.

So, I watched several documentaries in my spare time. It felt a bit more interesting to explore the unknown field with these real stories.
闲暇时光，我看了几部纪录片。夜深人静时，随着镜头去感受真实世界里的未知领域，有时倒比看大银幕上的虚构故事更有趣。
I was hooked by Master Class, a six-episode documentary that examines ancient culture through a modern perspective.
以现代视角重新去审视中国的古代文化，短小而雅致的六集纪录片《与古为友》成功把我“圈粉”了。
The first episode unfolds like a suspense story.
开头，就有些悬疑片的味道。
Just like a bird looks down upon a tranquil mountain, audience will hear a young woman’s voice narrating a Tang Dynasty poem.
在俯瞰的视角里，一座空旷寂寥的深山呈现眼前，一个清朗的年轻女声在吟诵一首唐代古诗。
The narrator is revealed to be folk singer-songwriter Chen Li, who is on her quest along with by poet Xi Chuan to study Chinese poetry’s influence over the Hippie Movement of the 1960s and the West’s craze for Han Shan, a poet and hermit in the Tang Dynasty.
原来，她是民谣唱作人陈粒。山中之行，她与诗人西川结伴，是为了探寻中国诗歌对于嬉皮士运动的影响，以及西方对于唐代神秘诗人寒山的热忱。
“The Cold Mountain Road is strange. No tracks of cart or horse… Here where the trail disappears. Form asks shadow, where to?”Chen recites the poem of Hanshan (Cold Mountain) in English.
“可笑寒山道，而无车马踪……此时迷径处，形问影何从。”陈粒用英语吟诵了寒山的这首诗。
Hanshan is a mysterious figure in the history of Chinese literature. From Xi Chuan’s introduction in the documentary, I came to know that Hanshan was reportedly born in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province.
在中国文学史上，寒山是个神秘的人物。在纪录片中，通过诗人西川的介绍，我得以知道，据传寒山出生在西安。
It is said that Hanshan quitted everything in life at the age of 30, bidding farewell to his wife and family. He trekked over 1,500 kilometers to live a secluded life in a cave in Tiantai Mountain in Zhejiang province. He spent the rest of his life meditating and writing poems.
据说，三十岁时，寒山突然放下人生中的一切，告别妻子与家人，从唐代的繁华首都跋涉1500公里，来到浙江天台山。在一个人迹罕至的山洞里，他在那里冥想和写诗，过着与世俗隔绝的生活。
Quite a surprise: Hanshan, who is even not quite known in China, has gained popularity in the English-speaking world more than 1,200 years later. American beatniks and hippies championed Hanshan as a fellow free spirit.
没想到，在一千二百年多年之后，这位在中国并不是那么“出名”的诗人，竟然在英语世界里火了起来。美国“披头族”和“嬉皮士”很推崇寒山，将他视为自由精神的代表。
American writer Jack Kerouac, the author of the novel On the Road —the classic which pioneered the Beat Generation, wrote The Dharma Bum, which is dedicated to Hanshan.
美国作家杰克·克鲁亚克的小说《在路上》，堪称美国 “垮掉的一代”的引领风潮之作。也正是这位作者，写了专门致敬寒山的《达摩流浪者》。
Kerouac’s friend Gary Snyder introduced Hanshan to many American readers with his RipRap and Cold Mountain Poems, and notable scholars like Arthur Waley and Burton Watson have produced selected translations as well. By far, American sinologist Bill Porter’s The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain is one of the most extensive, which had a big influence in the West.
克鲁亚克的朋友加里·斯奈德通过自己的《砌石与寒山诗》向许多美国读者介绍了寒山的诗歌。其他著名学者如阿瑟·韦利和伯顿·沃森等也翻译了一些寒山诗歌。迄今为止，美国汉学家比尔·波特的《寒山诗集》是其中收录寒山诗数量最多的英译本之一，在西方引起较大反响。
In the documentary of Master Class, poet and translator Xi Chuan, who excels in both Chinese and English, recalls all the interesting stories in literature history. From his point of view, Han Shan is one of the very few ancient Chinese poets who have achieved an international influence.
而在《与古未友》的纪录片里，学贯中西的诗人和翻译家西川，随意切换于中英文之间，娓娓道来典故。在他眼里，寒山真是中国古代少有的能产生世界级影响的诗人。
The poems Hanshan wrote among the cliffs and peaks in Tiantai Mountain have thus travelled over the time and cultural gap to convey the spirit of Zen to the West, influencing a lot of people including some celebrities such as Bob Dylan and Steve Jobs.
在这部纪录片里，也谈到了寒山写在天台山悬崖峭壁上的诗。这首诗穿越千年，将禅意传达给西方，从而影响了一大批人，甚至包括鲍勃·迪伦和乔布斯这样的名人。
Aside from Chinese poetry’s influence, the documentary also looks into the impact of other fields of Chinese culture, ranging from kung fu to architecture and cuisine.
而除了中国诗歌的影响力之外，该片还切入了古代文化的其他几个截面，诸如功夫、建筑和烹饪等等，去探究中国文化对现代人生的影响。
或许，在一个秋日的周末午后，沏一壶茶，蜷在沙发里，就着氤氲的茶香与和煦的阳光，看看古代文化的点点滴滴如何浸润到现代生活之中，如何漂洋过海影响西方世界，也别有一番趣致。
