− the little prince encounters a railway switchman
“Good morning,” said the little prince.
“Good morning,” said the railway switchman( n. one in charge of switches on a railroad line扳闸夫).
“What do you do here?” the little prince asked.
“I sort out travelers, in bundles of a thousand,”(我一包包地分选旅客，按每千人一包) said the switchman. “I send off the trains that carry them; now to the right, now to the left.”我打发这些运载旅客的列车，一会儿发往右方，一会儿发往左方
And a brilliantly lighted express train shook the switchman’s cabin ( cab(容器)+in(里面):像容器里面一样小-船舱，小木屋 )as it rushed(busy) by with a roar like thunder.这时，一列灯火明亮的快车匆忙驶过，发出雷鸣般的轰鸣，把把扳道房震的一颠一颠儿的。
“They are in a great hurry,” said the little prince. “What are they looking for?”他们可真的忙碌呀，他们要寻找什么？
“Not even the locomotive(adj 运动的；n 机车（用于推或拉铁轨上的货车或客车）【记】local地方，motive动：从一个地方动到另一个地方－机车) engineer knows that,” said the switchman.驾驶的人自己都不知道呢
And a second brilliantly lighted express thundered by, in the opposite direction.然后又一列灯火通明的快车朝着相反的方向轰隆隆地驶去
“Are they coming back already?” demanded the little prince.他们是不是回来了？
“These are not the same ones,” said the switchman. “It is an exchange.”他们不是原来的那批人了，这是一次对开列车
“Were they not satisfied where they were?” asked the little prince.他们不满意他们原来住的地方吗
“No one is ever satisfied where he is,” said the switchman.人们从来也不会满足的
And they heard the roaring thunder of a third brilliantly lighted express.
“Are they pursuing the first travelers?” demanded the little prince.他们在追随第一批的旅客吗
“They are pursuing nothing at all,” said the switchman. “They are asleep in there, or if they are not asleep they are yawning. 他们什么也没追随，他们只是在里面睡觉或打哈欠只有孩子们把鼻子贴在玻璃窗上往外看Only the children are flattening(压扁) their noses against the windowpanes(窗玻璃).”
“Only the children know what they are looking for,” said the little prince. “They waste their time over a rag (破布)doll and it becomes very important to them; and if anybody takes it away from them, they cry…”只有孩子们知道自己想要什么，他们会花费很多精力在布玩偶身上，于是布娃娃就成了他们珍视的东西，如果有人夺走他们的布娃娃，他们会嚎啕大哭…
“They are lucky,” the switchman said.他们可真幸运
