提到“解释”，绝大多数人想到的第一个词一定是explain。于是通篇文章全是explain。但是在上面的段落里，作者一共用了5个不同的词来表达“解释”/“不能解释”，表达“解释”的分别是：elucidate, illustrate和illuminate，表达“不能解释”的是shed light on和obscure。同时，我们也会发现，这5个词都和“光”有关。
在《旧约》创世纪的第一章中，上帝说要有光，于是就有了光。所以“light”这个词，在英文中往往和启发、智慧联系在一起，比如enlighten等。而lust，luc、lum等，都是由light一词演化而来的和“光”有关的词根。
其实在中文里，也喜欢用“光”表达类似意象：比如“人生的灯塔”、“照亮你的人生”、“开光”等。
shed light on：字面含义叫做“把光洒向”，引申为“照亮某物”，进而引申为今天用到的含义“解释”。上段中的shed little light on则表示“不能解释”。
elucidate, illustrate, illuminate这三个词中分别有luc，lust，lum这三个表示“光”的词根，都可翻译成“解释”。
obscure本意为“掩盖”，其实就是“把光遮住”，即“不能解释”。
三句话用了5个不同的词来表达“解释”这一个含义，这是用词的多样性。都用和“光”有关的词，这体现了选词的讲究和前后呼应，让本文“熠熠生辉”。
试想，如果上文的五个表达分别替换成——这也是大多数同学的作文中会用到的表达——explain, does not interpret, show, cannot indicate, construe，虽然也是在换词，但是单词之间没有连贯性，文章也就“黯淡无光”了。
