义乌，古名“乌伤”，孝子颜乌孝德感乌，其父病逝后颜乌孤身一人为他筑坟，引得附近乌鸦衔石助其葬父，待墓建成，乌口被石块划伤，故称“乌伤”。
Established in 222 BC, Yiwu was initially called Wushang county, named after Yan Wu, a local resident known for his filial piety.
颜乌的故事影响着一代又一代的义乌人，让他们继承孝与义的中华传统美德，秉承“积土而为山,积水而成渊”的坚毅精神。而这一精神在义乌人从古至今种养经商勤劳置业，对美好生活的不断追求上更是体现的淋漓尽致。
从清乾隆年间开始，义乌东乡北乡部分农民于冬春农闲时，肩挑“货郎担”，手摇拨浪鼓，用糖块或红糖熬制的姜糖粒，出县跨省，串村走巷，上门换取鸡毛、杂肥、旧棕破鞋、废铜烂铁，分类剔选销售，博取微利……
Yiwu boasts a history of small-scale business trade dating back to the reign of the Emperor Qianlong (1711-99) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). During slack seasons, farmers in Yiwu carrying poles with loads on their shoulders and rattle-drums in their hands, walked street after street, exchanging their hand-made ginger candy for sundries such as chicken feathers, old shoes and discarded metal. Then, they would classify and resell the sundries for meager profit.
伴随时代变革，市场变化，义乌人凭借祖辈积攒的行商经验，开创了独具特色的经营理念和销售方式，而今义乌已成为全球最大的小商品集散中心，2005年被联合国、世界银行等国际权威机构确定为世界第一大市场。
Yiwu people, endowed with their ancestors’ experiences in business, have developed their unique business philosophy and sales mode. The time-honored commercial city was designated the largest small commodity market in world by authorities such as the United Nations and the World Bank in 2005.
近年，义乌启动“一带一路”系列海外站建设，获批省级境外经贸合作区，“义新欧”班列实现常态化运邮。在2018年度中国最佳县级城市评选中，义乌位列第5名。
Yiwu ranked fifth among all Chinese county-level cities in 2018.
Seizing the trade opportunities, Yiwu has started construction of a series of stations in overseas countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, obtaining the title of provincial overseas economic and trade cooperation zone. In addition, the Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe rail line is up and running efficiently.
