参考消息网11月24日报道 （文/杜源江） 韩国前总统文在寅批评美国前总统特朗普对朝鲜的外交政策时，曾对《纽约时报》说过这样一句话：He(Trump) beat around the bush and failed to pull it through。显而易见，这句话中的“beat around the bush”并非字面意思“敲打灌木丛”。
实际上，“beat around the bush”是一句英语习语，英语词典中的解释是：discuss a matter without coming to the point；avoid addressing the main issue；using evasive or vague language instead of being straightforward(讨论事情时不谈正题，拐弯抹角；回避谈论主要问题；使用回避性或模糊性措辞，而非直截了当)。因此，文在寅批评特朗普的这句话意思是“他(特朗普)回避正题，未能做成事(指未能实现朝鲜半岛无核化)”。
那么，beat around the bush这种引申义从何而来呢？原来，这句习语与英式狩猎活动密切相关，其使用历史可追溯至数百年前。在中世纪时，猎人雇人用棍子敲打灌木丛周围区域(beat the area around bushes)，把躲藏在深处的猎物赶出来(flush out game taking cover underneath)。为何要敲打灌木丛周围区域，而不是直接敲打灌木丛呢？原因是灌木丛中除了可能藏有鸟、兔子和松鼠等不会伤人的动物外，还可能藏有野猪等会伤人的动物，直接敲打灌木丛可能带来危险。例如，不小心碰到蜂窝会导致打猎活动很快怏怏而终(Whacking a bees nest would put a swift and unwelcome end to the hunt)。
此外，含有“拐弯抹角”之义的英语习语还有dance around the topic(避免或回避直接谈论某个话题)和speak in circles(说话绕圈子)，皆与beat around the bush含义接近。
