第一、 英美语言中，表达“大约”可以用about(or so ), nearly(almost ),some, around, round 等表示。例如:(1)About five minutes later, he will be back. 大约5分钟后，他将回来。(2)The stone weighs around 60 pounds. 这块石头大约60磅重。
第二、表示“多于”、“超过”用over, more than 。例如:(1)The river is over 1,200 metres long. 这条河有1200多米长。(2)My home is more than five kilometers away from our school. 我家离学校超过五公里。
知识纵深:over 和more than 经常用于句型转换。
第三、表示“不超过”、“少于”用less than, below 。例如:(1)Tom is less than fifteen years old. 汤姆不到15岁。(2)There’s nothing below 10 dollars .没有一样东西在10美元以下。
知识纵深:more than 和less than 是一对互为反义词组，经常出现在改错和句型转换题型中。
第四、表示“左右”用or so 表示。例如:Great changes have taken place in my hometown in the past ten years or so. 在过去10年左右的时间里，我的家乡发生了巨大变化。
知识纵深:上面这个例句在英语中非常重要，首先in the past ten years 要用现在完成时，不要见到past (过去)就用一般过去时；其次take place (发生)是个不及物动词短语，不能用于被动语态。所以不能用have been taken place( ✘)。
第五、表示“……或者……以上”用…or more 表示。例如:The hall can hold 1,500 people or more. 这个大厅可以容纳1500人或者更多。
知识纵深:hold 意思很多。可以有以下几个常考的意思:拿着，抓住；容纳；举行；掌控。
第六、表示“……或者……以下”用…or less 表示。例如:(1)There are 1,000 students or less in our school. 我们学校有1000或者将近1000名学生。(2)The school bus can hold 25 people or less. 这辆校车可容纳25人或25人以下。
