June
By Hu Liang
Nothing announces purple like the flower of the alfalfa,
and this tiny blue dragonfly is the master of brevity.
The nearby brook exemplifies limpidity,
and has learned the art of washing dust from my face.
The flower’s purple song is sweet as gentle ripples;
brevity is the pheasant’s glowing tail
suddenly disappearing into the undergrowth
I excel in turning mountains, and you are the apotheosis of azure.

ThePoem of the River
By Nan Shutang
The river is a poet too–when it composes
no one knows what expressive waves or ripples
might be created, or which stanza banks
might be breached by its surging words and forces.
Though often cluttered with ice, it expresses itself forever
Subtle currents and eddies stir–what is theessence of a poem?
goes the old question. But here the answer is always:
in the river.
“The great eastward-flowing river”and“peacefully running brook below the little bridge”
are familiar images from Song poetry and those lines
appear engraved on a marble balustrade by the river
shy as a child who is over praised by adults.
In the dry season, dredgers and tractors take away
the weed and excessive deposition from the bed
to transform the poetic voices of the river.
At such a time the river is confined to one-line poems
the blood of a single vein trickles over the river’s almost empty bed.

Camping
By Hu Liang
Suddenly awake I open the little window of the tent
and witness the beauty of the new-born sun
leaping from the peak of the mountain. My friends doze on
oblivious to my sun-kissed reawakening.
This stunning sunlight is as new
as my word-hoard is ancient. I emerge
stretch and reach for my shoes half hidden in frost
and tangled grasses that fight to thrive in this cold dawn.
Then I recall how we clambered up through darkness to arrive
last night and put the tent up as the stars sang out above.
The barbecue, the wine, the song and dance!
until the stars nestled in their nocturnal beds of fog.
We know next to nothing about this site
surrounded by ravines as deep as time.

Everything Hides Its Pain
By Tian Xiang
When the wind picks up, the fallen leaves take wing
like ecstatic butterflies. But I know these rootless
disconnected leaves have only a vagrant joy.
Swarms of ants race against the autumn winds
before torrential rain can overcome them.
These anxious insects have stocked their communal larders–
such is the thin happiness of ants.
The bird in flight through the wood is unaware of the gun.
Everything hides its pain.
I contemplate the magnificent mysteries of this world.

On Anthropology
By Li Yuansheng
In your face I can see all the rivers
that or your mother had to traverse
I see the submerged obstacles and depths
and the thunder storms you weathered long ago
And if you’ve managed to wade through the swamp
I wonder who is left there trapped in the mud?
If you’ve managed to survive the long night
who remains by the embers of a bonfire in the wild?
In your face I see the blurred flight of an arrow
and your ancestor diving with pain into the shelter of the woods
We are the civilised descendants, graceful as sika deer
this afternoon we read millennia in each other’s faces
And now the river is shimmering around you like hope,
I want to remove your arrow, though it may have gone too deep.
