Actor Constance Wu, 36, grew up in Virginia, the child of Taiwanese parents, and has been a vocal advocate for better representation of people of colour in Hollywood. This year, she starred in the hit comedy Crazy Rich Asians, the first major Hollywood studio film for 25 years to feature a majority Asian cast. For Wu, who plays a New York University economist whose boyfriend is heir to one of Singapore’s biggest fortunes, blazing a trail was not new. She also stars in the hit US TV sitcom Fresh off the Boat, which recently became the first Asian-American network show to be renewed for five seasons.
①sitcom [ˈsitˌkɒm] n.
I heard that a new sitcom is coming out next season.
The director of Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M Chu, described it as “more than a movie, it’s a movement”. Why was so much riding on the film?
Time. When an underserved, under-represented population hasn’t had a cultural touchstone in a very long time, in this case a quarter of a century, there’s a lot of anticipation.
②touchstone [‘tʌtʃ.stəʊn] n.
A man’s deed is the touchstone of his greatness or littleness.
Has it been possible already to see some positive effects of the film’s success in this way?
Yes, I’ve already seen it. But it’s a practice, not an accomplishment. Sort of like fitness — you don’t exercise for a month and then think you never have to exercise again. You have to keep maintaining it.

Did the lack of representation in Hollywood ever deter you?
The lack of Asian representation didn’t really deter me because being an actor was never a choice, it was my identity. It was a part of me, as much as being a woman is a part of me. It didn’t matter if I didn’t make a living from it. Plenty of people have jobs that don’t have to do with their passion. I supported myself as a waitress for over 10 years and there’s dignity in that. People assume that actors are seeking success or fame. For some of us, it’s not that at all, it’s just because we love acting more than anything in the world.
③dignity [‘dɪɡnəti] n.
He suffered a long series of illnesses with tremendous dignity and fortitude.
Immigration is a big issue in US politics at the moment. How important is it that films like Crazy Rich Asians give people different ways of seeing Asians in America?
Story is how we make meaning in our lives. Not everyone has Asian-Americans or other immigrants in their hometown. So it’s easy to make assumptions about groups of people you’re unfamiliar with. Diverse representation in stories provides more familiarity and connection to people as humans. When that humanity grows, people make fewer assumptions, because they have more “data” to work from. I’m using “assumption” here as a sort of euphemism for the word “prejudice”.
④euphemism [‘juːfə.mɪzəm] n.
The term “early retirement” is nearly always aeuphemismfor redundancy nowadays.

You have advocated for Asian-American girls and for voting rights. Do you recall your first experience of activism?
When I was in middle school I wrote an editorial for my town’s local newspaper. They actually published it. It’s ironic because that editorial was about being pro-life and I’m actually pro-choice. But I was just a kid back then. I’m older now, I have a more developed capacity for empathy and compassion . . . qualities that naturally lead to a pro-choice stance. It’s been easier to take a stand as you get older because the “why” of what you stand for becomes easier to articulate.
⑤articulate [ɑrˈtɪkjuleɪt] adj.
She is clearly the most articulate and self-possessed member of her family.
You spoke out about sexual harassment in Hollywood before #MeToo started up. How difficult a decision was this for you? And what do you think are the movement’s biggest achievements and challenges?
It wasn’t a difficult decision — I’m a real in-the-moment type of person; I don’t really think about the future. No one else was saying it back then and it pissed me off, so I said something. It would have hurt my heart more to repress it than it did to lose a few acting jobs. Without heart, you don’t have jack shit in acting. So, it made sense to me. The movement’s biggest achievement is opening up the conversation. Awareness. The movement’s biggest challenge is to keep maintaining and growing its intersectionality.

Name one thing you’d most like to change next year?
I’d like men to stop being defensive in conversations about equality or sexual harassment. Defensiveness makes the conversation about you. This is bigger than you and your innocence. It’s bigger than any one person. Your defensiveness is part of the problem. So just stop.
⑥ innocence [‘ɪnəs(ə)ns] n.
She could have established her owninnocenceand virtue easily enough.
You’ve had success in the past few years with Fresh off the Boat, but how does this compare with the success of a Hollywood hit?
Crazy Rich Asians’ success feels like Fresh off the Boat’s success but on a much larger scale. The nicest part about success is that it’s given me the luxury of choice . . . I have more choice in what projects to devote myself to. That’s a huge privilege that I don’t take for granted. The hardest part is also probably choice — you want to do so many things but you don’t have time for it all.
