右绕佛塔，功德无量
The benefits of circumambulating a stupa clockwise are infinite
我建议：大家平时不管在哪里看见佛堂、佛寺、佛像、佛塔，没有很多精力和时间的话，至少也要转三圈。
Here is my suggestion: Wherever you come across a shrine, a temple, a Buddha’s picture, a stupa, or a pagoda, make sure you circumambulate it, at least for three times if you don’t have enough time or energy to do more.
佛塔，是佛法僧三宝的所依，
A stupa symbolizes the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
也是佛陀的法身，是佛陀的意所依。
It also represents the Dharmakaya and embodies the mind of the Buddha.
但凡佛教兴盛的地方，佛塔都比较多。
In places where Buddhism flourishes, stupas or similar structures are common sights.
比如在泰国，无论你到山上、城市里，一路上佛塔随处可见。
For example, in Thailand, whether up in the mountains or down in the cities, there are many pagodas along the way.
同样，在藏地，哪里都可以看见白色的佛塔。
Similarly, in Tibet many white stupas dot its vast landscape.
我们藏族人有种传统：见到佛塔、寺院或出家人时，会马上摘下帽子，双手合掌。
For us Tibetans, it is traditional when coming upon a stupa or a temple to immediately remove our hats and put our hands together to do a prostration or to circumambulate it.
如果没时间到近前顶礼，远远在车里或者马上、路上恭敬合十，这样做功德也非常大。
If we don’t have time to get closer to it, we’ll put our palms together and pay homage from a distance in our car, on a horse, or by the roadside. This is also very meritorious.
转绕佛塔有什么功德呢？
What are the benefits of circumambulating the stupa?
《右绕佛塔功德经》说：“一切天龙、夜叉、鬼神都会对你亲近供养，而不会肆意加害。”
The Sutra on the Merit of Circumambulating Pagodas Clockwisesays,“All the devas, nagas, yakshas, and spirits will respect and protect you; they will never inflict harm on you wantonly.”
佛经中记载，往昔有批商人到海里取宝，
An account is told in the scripture. Once upon a time, a group of merchants set off to hunt for treasure in the sea.
途中遇到鲸鱼的危害，几乎被它吞食时，他们大声地念佛号，于是鲸鱼闭口放过了他们。
On their way, they came across a menacing whale that was about to gobble them up.Just then, the merchants loudly invoked the Buddha and the whale let them go.
后来鲸鱼转生为人，名叫须瑞迦塔，他从小就入寺为僧，很快获得了阿罗汉果。
This whale was later reborn as a human who became a monk at a young age and attained the state of Arhat swiftly.
那他获得圣果的因缘是什么呢？
What then was the cause of this monk’s spiritual accomplishment?
原来他久远劫前曾是一只苍蝇，因闻到佛塔周围的牛粪味，很幸运地绕塔一周。
As it turns out, many lives ago he was a fly that was once attracted by the smell of cow dung near a stupa. The fly fortuitously flew around the stupa for one full circle.
我们千万不要认为绕塔一周或礼塔一次的功德不大，
Therefore, the merit of making one circumambulation or prostration to the stupa cannot be underestimated.
因为佛塔是威力强大的圣境，稍作一点微小的善行，都足以让自己净罪积资。
A stupa is a very powerful holy object for our veneration, and performing any good deeds in front of it, no matter how small, is very effective in purifying karma and accumulating merit.
因此，当你到了有佛塔的地方，一定要转绕，不要拍个照片就马上离开了。
Therefore, when you come across a stupa or a pagoda, be sure to circumambulate it; do not just busily take pictures and leave.
值得注意的是，在绕塔时，右绕（顺时针）有兴建的功德，左绕（逆时针）有毁坏的过失，
It’s worth noting that when walking around a stupa, keeping the stupa on our right side (clockwise direction) enhances merit, while keeping it on the left side (counter-clockwise direction) ruins it.
所以一定要右绕。
Therefore, it is imperative to circumambulate clockwise;
如果方向弄翻了，不但没有功德，反而有非常大的过患。
reversing the direction not only is meritless but also engenders grave negativity.
汉地大藏经中的《右绕佛塔功德经》，也广讲了右绕的功德。
In the Han Tripitaka theSutra on the Merit of Circumambulating Pagodas Clockwisethere are extensive accounts on the merit of circumambulating in a clockwise direction.
1987年我们去五台山时，整天都在绕白塔，
In 1987, during our trip to Wutai Mountain, we circumambulated the Big White Pagoda all day long.
当时看到好多佛教徒，甚至一些出家人竟然在左绕。
At that time, we were taken aback to see many people, even some monastic disciples, circumambulating counter-clockwise.
我们当中有一个扬意喇嘛，他每天的工作就是挡着他们。
Among us was a lama called Yangyi who took it upon himself to correct them.
有次他拉着一个年轻女孩的手，不让她那么绕，
Once, he went as far as grabbing the hand of a young girl and telling her not to circumambulate in the wrong direction.
但他不懂汉语，就使劲地拉着她。那个女孩吓坏了，一直大叫：“啊！不要拉我，不要拉我！”
Speaking no Chinese, he just tugged her hand, alarming the girl who then screamed, “Stop dragging me, stop dragging me!”
其实那个喇嘛心很清净，当时他六七十岁了，也不懂什么规矩，就是在那儿挡着，叫他们不要逆转。
But this lama, in fact, had a very pure intention; he was in his sixties or seventies at that time, and all he wanted to do was to ask people not to circumambulate incorrectly, even at the expense of proper manners.
不过，这几年来，大家也慢慢懂得了这些道理。
It’s a relief that the situation has since improved.
今年我去五台山时，就发现白塔周围有很多转经轮，每个游客在转绕时，都是右绕，这是非常令人欣慰的。
During my trip to the Wutai Mountain this year, I noticed that many prayer wheels have been installed around the Big White Pagoda and that everyone was circumambulating clockwise.
假如有些寺院里实在找不到佛塔，只有高僧大德的灵塔，那他的灵塔，你也一定要转绕。
Sometimes pagodas, instead of stupas, are found on the grounds of temples. Pagodas usually house the physical relics of eminent Buddhist masters, and we should also circumambulate them.
假如连灵塔也没有，那可以转绕寺院里的佛像。
If no such structures for worship are around, we can still circumambulate the statues of the Buddha inside the temple.
藏地寺院里的佛像，大多紧贴着大殿后面，殿堂里没有转绕的路。
In Tibet, the statue of the Buddha is usually attached to the back wall of the shrine hall, leaving no room to pass around it.
但汉地很多佛像的后面是可以过的，
But in most Chinese temples, there is space behind the statue that allows people to walk around it.
以佛像为所缘境进行转绕，这个功德也不可思议。
The merit of circumambulating the statue of the Buddha is just as inconceivable.
我建议：大家平时不管在哪里看见佛堂、佛寺、佛像、佛塔，没有很多精力和时间的话，至少也要转三圈。
So this is my suggestion: Wherever you see a shrine, a temple, a Buddha’s picture, a stupa or a pagoda, make sure you circumambulate it, at least three times if you don’t have enough time or energy to do more.
其实这样的转绕，印度很多大德非常重视。
Circumambulation is a Dharma activity highly extolled by great Indian masters.
在印度，有转绕城市获得成就的人，有转绕圣殿获得成就的人，
There are ample accounts about how sages achieved accomplishment by circling a holy city or a holy shrine,
也有转绕卡萨巴挪观音圣像而病体康复、获得成就的人……
and how some people owe their spiritual attainment or recovery from illness to their circumambulating the Kasarpani Statue of Avalokiteshvara.
