Have you ever watched a football match like the cruel one depicted in this cartoon? In the field stand four goals, each of which is under guard; but surprisingly, the four goalkeepers are brothers and sister, and they are each trying to kick their eldery father, like a football, toward the others.
The picture is not an empty warning; In fact, more and more people now are unwilling to look after their elderly parents. People now are busier with earning a living than in the past, spending more time on work or study; thus, they have limited time to spend with their parents. Another factor that we cannot ignore is that when people grow old, they tend to become physically weak and unable to live on their own; most of them need care on a regular basis. So we can understand why more and more middle-aged persons avoid taking care of their parents.
Being busy can never be a reason to shrug off the responsibility of looking after one’s own parents. We must do something to change the current situation. The government should improve the national elderly support system, making sure that the old can live a comfortable life. Public media should make an effort to educate the public that caring for their aged parents Is more important than any other undertaking.
