We often think of scientific learning as a chemistry experiment or memorizing biology textbook details. In reality, preschoolers engage daily in scientific learning: they ask “how” and “why” questions and seek answers to these questions.

The scientific method at this age is not about high-tech equipment but about the process of investigation. Kids are natural investigators with young minds that are hard-wired to engage in science. The world i(⊙o⊙)…s a mystery and they want answers!

We can help them at home and school by creating an environment that engages their senses and lets them to sort and classify, touch and observe, build and ask questions. This is the process they use to build their sense of the physical world.

Encouraging science means encouraging curiosity. Here are some things you can do to encourage a scientific mind.

Make hypotheses and test them. I think blue and yellow paint make red when mixed together… Let’s find out! What will sink or float? Put a bunch of toys and household items next to the bathtub, make your guesses, and then toss them in one at a time.

Make observations. What is obvious to us is still wondrous and new to our children. Go on a nature walk in spring and point out the flower buds. What are they now, and what will they become?

Categorize your world. Show children that order underlies nature. When eating, separate your fruits and vegetables and point out dairy, grains and protein. When reading a book about animals, talk about the five categories: amphibians, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. If you don’t quite remember the differences, you may have to brush up on your own science to stay ahead of Junior!

Investigate stuff. There are a wealth of children’s books that explain any number of topics using fun photos and imagery. Read a variety of fiction and non-fiction together. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is both a classic tale and a great way to learn about the science behind the life stages of a caterpillar.
