In Year 5C, we believe mathematics should be full of hands-on engaging activities that allow students to think critically and use different strategies to learn. When you place these activities in Maths Centres in your classroom, you’re giving your students an opportunity to practice strategies and mathematical thinking independently.

Peer teaching

Some parents may be worried about students not paying attention during Maths Centres as the teacher is supervising multiple activities at one time. However we ensure total engagement by creating fun and engaging centresthat students are motivated to complete.

When students are working independently or in groups/partners during math time, they’re learning more than just a mathematical concept. They can see their classmates using different strategies and thinking. Students are also working on problem-solving skills and learning key social skills, like cooperation and teamwork. These skills are so important.

Math learning through games

Maths Centres allow us to meet with small groups of students. This allows us to teach a more level-based math lesson that is appropriate for individual students. In the small group, we can teach the math lesson needed but also review or pre-teach math concepts depending on the students. Usingmath gamesin small groups as a reward or fun activity is always a great option as well.

Using interactive whiteboards for learning

Setting up Maths Centres in our classroom lets students know they are learning in a stress-free environment. Students understand they are not being graded during centres or being checked over every single problem on a worksheet. This helps to counteract anxiety surrounding maths learning. Students are not as worried about getting problems wrong or not being able to complete the work correctly. Our Maths Centres are designed to create a stress-free, an “open to mistakes” time, which in turn, allows for the best conditions for learning.
