Whenever I read Dream of the Red Chamber, I can’t help but dream about visiting Daguanyuan, or the Grand View Garden, for a few days so I could hang out with these principal characters living inside.

无论何时重读《红楼梦》,我都会忍不住脑补自己探访大观园、和各位主角一起逛园子、开诗社、赴夜宴的情景。

The Grand View Garden provides a setting for much of the story of Dream of the Red Chamber. It’s where the protagonist Jia Baoyu and several of the “12 beauties” live in well-designed courtyards.

《红楼梦》中的许多情节都发生在大观园。那一座座充满意蕴的庭院为宝玉和众位姐妹构筑了一个自由清净的天地。

Ever since the birth of the novel, the 12 main female characters, aka the “twelve beauties of Jinling”, became the recurring subjects of depiction in many artists’ works which further boosted the work’s popularity.

自小说诞生以来,有许多艺术家加入粉丝团,围绕“金陵十二钗”进行主题创作,给小说“刷流量”。

Among them there was Gai Qi, a Qing Dynasty painter who loved Dream of the Red Chamber so much that he made several albums of paintings and woodblock prints depicting the “twelve beauties” and other leading figures.

清代画家改琦就是其中一位,他创作了几套以“金陵十二钗”和其他主要人物为主题的画册和木刻画,足见他对《红楼梦》的痴迷。

The National Museum of China owns one such collection of paintings in its assembly of art, which is on show at The Sole Pinnacle and an Immortal Masterpiece exhibition.

国家博物馆就珍藏了一套落款为改琦的《红楼梦》图册,这次也在“隻立千古——《红楼梦》文化展”上亮相了。

Gai Qi is best known for painting women in real life, such as court ladies and underprivileged figures who led a tragic life. He also created illustrations for fictional characters like those from Dream of the Red Chamber.

改琦以仕女画闻名,他刻画的对象有现实生活中的闺阁佳丽和遭遇不幸的下层社会女性,他也为诸如《红楼梦》等文学作品中的角色创作插图。

Gai Qi approachedhis subjects with simple, soft delimitations and a light, tender and moisturized palette of colors. By doing so he was to enhance the grace of those women and meanwhile, their physical weakness and bleak circumstances.

改琦常常用简练、轻柔的笔触去勾勒女性,他多采用浅淡、素雅而润泽的色调,凸显这些女性的淑雅静逸的同时,又表现出她们的单薄身姿和凄凉的境况。

This style to portray women was popular in late Qing and is also evident in the works of Fei Danxu, another Qing painter who specialized in depicting court ladies.

这种突出女性清丽而又矜持柔弱的绘画风格在清末颇为盛行,在另一位仕女画高手费丹旭的作品中我们同样能够感受到。

In the collection of the Palace Museum there is a colored album, painted on silk, of the “twelve beauties” by Fei Danxu. And in these paintings we could identify some typical features of a beauty at the time, such as a face in the round shape of a duck’s egg, the eyebrows as delicate and curving as that of willow leaves, and tiny, ruby lips as mellow as cherries.

故宫博物院藏有一套费丹旭绘制于绢上的《十二金钗图》。翻看图册,我们会发现晚清时期,一个典型的美女形象大致具有这些特点:鸭蛋脸,柳叶眉,樱桃嘴,朱红唇。

The Grand View Garden evokes in us an utopian feeling. It is a place where the heroes and heroines enjoy a freedom from rigid social norms of the time. They engage with a variety of recreational activities, presenting a lively atmosphere that we modern people also aspire to.

大观园是曹雪芹构筑的“理想国”,在那里,红楼梦中人们得以稍稍摆脱严苛的礼教,他们尽情享受生活的丰富多彩,他们迸发出的天真自由、活泼畅快令当下的我们也充满向往。
