I don’t know when I started hearing about the “Morandi colors”, a phrase people use to describe a soft color system in fashion and home furnishing designs.
忘了是什么时候开始，“莫兰迪色”被大家反复提及：“莫兰迪色”的妆容、服装，“莫兰迪色”的家居。
But whenever it was, the mentions became much more frequent when a court conflict-themed drama, Story of Yanxi Palace (Yan Xi Gong Lyu), caused a sensation. Many said the highly rated drama was dominated by a special tone that resembled the signature palette of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964).
关于“莫兰迪色”的讨论尤其在《延禧攻略》成为现象级“宫斗剧”后达到一个高峰。很多人说《延禧》的色调让人联想到意大利艺术家乔治·莫兰迪那些标志性的静物画。
Despite this proliferation, “Morandi colors” is not a technical term in fine arts.
仿佛整个世界都被柔和的“莫兰迪色”占领了，虽然，一开始就不存在所谓的“莫兰迪色”，在美术专业里没有这个提法。
The trick Morandi played in most of his still lifes is he chose a lot of warm tones with a high degree of gray. He is not the only painter to do that, but he is famous for excelling in this approach, transmitting a comfortable, tasteful feeling.
莫兰迪所做的其实是很多画家的共同追求：调色，使劲调，调出高级灰；而莫兰迪是个中高手，他调出灰度极高的暖色调、并在画中大量运用，给人感觉非常舒服、雅致。
Just in time for the zeitgeist, a Morandi still life is now on show at the 500 Years of Western Paintings exhibition, on display at the Tsinghua University Art Museum through Dec 23.
仿佛是对“莫兰迪色”热潮的呼应，这次清华大学艺术博物馆的《西方绘画500年》大展也呈现了一幅莫兰迪的静物画。

As we can see in his work, Morandi is noted not only for brilliantly applying colors with a nuanced graduation in tone, but also for limiting his subjects largely to a handful of objects, including boxes, vases, bowls, cups and bottles, in simple composition.
正如我们所看到的，莫兰迪的画之所以为人称道，不仅仅因为他选用细微渐变的色调、并对这些颜色进行高明的排列组合；他的静物画辨识度如此之高还因为他的构图简单，主题也很“单调”，画来画去无非就是那几样：盒子、花瓶、碗、杯子和瓶子。
He spent long hours in his studio, observing containers of varied shapes.
他整天就是“宅”在画室里头，和这些大大小小的瓶瓶罐罐“厮守”。

He didn’t seek for a precise depiction of the details. He hoped to achieve a timeless harmony by portraying these colored geometries neatly staged on a piece of tablecloth.
他并不追求细节的准确刻画，他反复勾勒这些有颜色的、整齐摆放在桌布上的几何形，以期达到一种永恒的和谐。

Morandi’s life path was as simple as his still lifes. Born in Bologna, he graduated from the city’s Academy of Fine Arts, and taught there for a long time.
莫兰迪的生活轨迹就如同他的作品一样简单。他出生于博洛尼亚，他毕业于博洛尼亚美术学院，并在母校任教多年。

Morandi never left his hometown for long, and never left Europe at all. He also did a handful of works portraying Bologna’s landscapes.
他几乎都在老家呆着，没有长时间离开的时候；他甚至没有到过欧洲以外的地方。他的创作中也有少量描绘家乡博洛尼亚的风景画。

Morandi was a bachelor throughout his whole life. He preferred artistic pursuits over marriage.
莫兰迪终身未娶，或者说，他跟艺术、跟他的瓶瓶罐罐们“结婚”了。
He said, “The only interest the visible world awakens in me concerns space, light, color and form.”
他说，“空间、光线、颜色和形式，是这个视觉世界唯一能唤醒我兴趣的地方。”
Morandi’s still lifes render the pleasures of tonal softness and composition balance — a different perspective on the world.
莫兰迪的静物，色调柔和，构图平衡，既给我们带来视觉的愉悦，也赋予我们全新看待世界的视角。
