英语文学的描写在于细节,如此可以细分为物和人两大类别。就物而言,又分山川和建筑。
山川又可以细分为:forest, mountains, caves, islands and volcanoes, paths, rivers, sea。
Chapter 1 Forest
这一节说树林,无非围绕:草、花、树(包括树干、树茎、树叶、藤蔓)、颜色。其中读者最好多记忆一些文学作品中常见的花名,好比汉语小说中常用牵牛花、红豆等。(虽然有点累,但是你会发现很值得)
以2016年10月高考真题作文为例:妻子和丈夫分手后迷路了,两段的开头:
1. But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again.
2. It was daybreak when Jane woke up.
这两段描写都会涉及到森林景色的描写,第一段的森林景色应该是和黑夜有关,表达出妻子的恐惧;第二段景色描写应该是和晨曦有关,暗示希望。这样的描写不用多,每段一两句即可。读者都可以在本节中找到答案。

高频句子和段落
以下段落涉及到树、草、花、叶子:
They were welcomed by wave after wave of the gently nodding heads of daffodils and the bowed heads of a blazing carpet of bluebells. The ground was painted with red poppies and yellow gorse. The petals had been shaken off the bush and lay like a carpet of pink confetti on the floor. It was impossible to move quickly through the spidery tangle of trees and bushes. Some trees stood tall and proud, flinging their branches up to the sun to frame the deep blue sky. Some trees were joined together like a crowd of vivid green umbrellas. The branches swayed to the rhythm of the wind and their leaves fluttered like graceful butterflies. Patches of misty light shone through the gaps in the trees. The leaves glowed in the early morning light like hundreds of tiny hands.
The forest was a dark, tangled maze and it was impossible to find a way through.
森林是一个黑暗的迷宫,很难找到一条路穿过。
The branches of the thick, tangled trees had spread and twisted to form dark, overhead tunnels and created secret paths.
浓密、缠绕的树枝伸展、扭曲,形成黑暗的高架隧道,形成秘密通道。
The ceiling of thick branches shut out the sky and covered the path in darkness.
浓密的树枝天花板遮住了天空,在黑暗中遮住了小径。
The dead branches rose up and grasped at her ankles like bony fingers.
枯枝竖起来,像骨瘦如柴的手指一样抓住她的脚踝。
Cloaked in mist, the trees looked like ghostly figures.
这些树披着薄雾,看起来像鬼影。
后记:Why do I write this book?
We all agree that there is no substitute forreading to improvestudents’writing. However,we live in a world dominated by the moving image, be it television or game consoles. How then can we developstudents’writing when there is a reluctance to read or engage with a text? The answer is to feed their imaginations with pictures, sounds, games and role play, and extendstudents’vocabulary to describe what they see, hear, smell and touch.
As a parent and a teacher, I found that, although a dictionary was useful to find the meaning of a new word and a thesaurusto find an alternative, there was no comprehensive, thematic resource that gavestudentsthe vocabulary to use in their descriptive writing. They were reliant on their reading or on an input from the teacher or parent.
