High-profile kindness will keepyouat anadvantage
Kindness, undoubtedly, is the most precious and best thing.
It is too beautiful,
so it needs to be illuminated by the rationallight.
善良，无疑是最可贵、最美好的东西。
正是因为它太美好了，
所以需要理性光芒的照耀。

A boy is squatting by the chicken coop, greatly fascinatedto look at chicksmagically hatchedout of eggs, one after another.
一个小孩蹲在鸡窝旁，出神地看着一个又一个鸡蛋神奇地化作了小鸡。
But there is one exception. Maybe it is a weak life, or the eggshell is too hard. From the very small hole, the boy can see theeager eyesof the chick and hear its worried chirps, but it fails to pull itself out of the shell for quite a while.

We can say that the littleboy lacks the common sense in helping the chick out of the shell, but good intentions can result in an unsatisfactory ending. However, similar things are not avoided due to the increased intelligenceof human beings.

后来，因为一个叫海伦的美女，特洛伊战争爆发。阿喀琉斯作为希腊联军的第一勇士，多次以一己之力，救希腊联军于危亡的边缘。然而，在一次战役中，阿喀琉斯被敌人射中了脚踵。
He was a great god of war who gave his life at the kindness of his father’s impulse. We call this kindness as “Petty Kindness”.
一代战神，就因为父亲的一念之仁，葬送了性命。我们将这种善良称之为“妇人之仁”。
Probably because his loving mother had the desperate love for her son, she was easy to lose the rational judgment. However, the true kindness is always based on the rational judgment.

Speaking of kindness, the first reaction of many people is “to be good to others”even at their own sacrificefor the benefit of others. I’m afraid it is the first misunderstanding of kindness.
说到善良，很多人第一反应就是要“对别人好”，甚至是牺牲自己，为别人好。这恐怕是善良第一大误区。
山西有一对普通的农村夫妇，男主人姓陈。年近四十，自己生养有三个孩子。
一天，陈先生在路上捡到一个残疾女婴，领回家喂养。在接下来几年的时间里，陈先生陆陆续续又捡回了几个被遗弃的孩子回家。当地民政局听说陈家爱收养弃婴，干脆将福利院中没人认养的孩子也送到了陈家。
26年的时间，陈家前后收养了四十个弃婴。
原本就不富裕的家庭，为此承受了巨大的压力。没饭吃，找左邻右舍去借，久而久之，大部分人都躲着陈家，不与之来往；家里孩子太多，脏乱不堪，臭气熏天，所有人都绕着走；自己亲生的孩子也只好辍学，早早地接受社会的残酷检验。
为此，长子和父母闹矛盾，离家出走。
Are the Chens kind-hearted? Absolutelyyes.
陈家人善良吗？绝对善良。
Their deeds are evoking praises and tears from us, so we hold them in high esteem with great admiration, but they are not worthy of modeling on. For those who abandon babies, the Chens are kind-hearted; but for the children of the Chens, isn’t it a cruel reality! Moreover, is it the best ending for those abandoned babies? Not for sure.
他们的事迹可歌、可泣、可敬、可佩，但是未必可取。对于那些弃婴来说，陈家人自然是善良的；但对于自己的亲生孩子来说，这何尝不是一种残忍！况且，对于那些弃婴来说，这样的结局真的就是最好吗？未必。
“In poverty, one can attend to their kindness in solitude;In success, one tries to let others be benefited.”
“穷则独善其身，达则兼济天下。”
The first meaning of kindness is not “benefiting others”but “benefiting oneselfor seeking self-interest”without troubling others, which, in essence, is an act of kindness.
善良的第一层含义不是“利人”，而是“利己”，自己足够好，不给别人添麻烦，这本身就是一种善良。
Whoever blows their own trumpetcan not get anywhere, but the kindness devoted to others’benefit actually runs against human nature and the common sense. It is not fantasybut hypocrisy.
鼓吹毫不利己，专门利人的善良，是违背人性的，也是违背常识的。不是幻想，就是虚伪。
When you take good care of yourself, you can do justice to others withinyour power or capacity, which is the true kindness.
照顾好自己的同时，在能力范围之内，再照顾别人，就是善良的第二重含义。

超出能力范围的善良，是缺乏理性的，也许主观是好的，但结局却未必不是坏。就如山西陈氏夫妇，收养四十个弃婴，完全超出了他们的能力之外。不仅自己落得个众叛亲离，甚至勾起了当地民政局的“惰政”。

The rational kindness, at times, is merciless, but it is likely to be the true great kindness.
充满理性的善良，有时候甚至是冷酷无情的，然而那可能才是真正的大善。
隋朝吏部侍郎薛道衡曾经游览钟山开善寺。
在寺庙大殿之中，薛道衡问随行的小和尚：“你能不能告诉我，为什么金刚怒目圆睁，其他菩萨却低眉善目啊？”小和尚回答说：“金刚怒目，所以降服四魔；菩萨低眉，所以慈悲六道。”
一时恻隐，包庇恶人，看似小善，实则大恶；惩处罪犯，看似冷酷，实则大善。
To terrorists, Putinpointed out, “Forgiveness is between them and God.But it is my job to arrange the meeting.”
对于恐怖分子，普京说：“原谅他们，是上帝的事情；而我们的责任就是送他们去见上帝。”

面对一个饥饿的人，有人给他一条鱼，有人给他一根鱼竿，带他去河边，教会他钓鱼。
The former seems to be kind-hearted enough, but they can feed the hungry man with only one meal. However, the latter seems to lack the tender feelings but can help the hungry man stay alive free from hunger all his life. This is the wisdom as well as the charm of kindness under the rational aura.
前者看似善良，却只能解决他一餐之饥；后者看似缺乏柔情，却能保他从此一生免于饥饿之苦。这是智慧，也是理性光环下善良的魅力。
“Great kindness never shows off while the kind helpers offer assistance to others do not care about thanksgiving and returns”; Taoism advocates “Highest Virtue is free from Virtue, but actuallyit is the great virtue”, “Great virtueis as clear and precious as water”. This is the top level of kindness.
“大仁不仁，大善不惠”，道家主张“上德不德，是以有德”、“上善若水”。这是善的最高境界。
In the nature, sunshine, rain and dewtake delight in runningtheir courseand reciprocating others.
如阳光，如雨露，自得其乐，同时施惠于人。
Therefore, the kindness illuminated by the rational lightdoes not mean you are good to others withno sense of propriety, but it can be simply divided into three different meanings.
所以，理性光芒照耀下的善，并不是一味对别人好，而是可以简单分为三层含义。
Firstly, caring about personal interests but not encroaching upon others’.
第一层，利己，但不损人。
The most essential kindness is to play your own role well enough and assume your responsibilitieswithout troubling others. Conducting yourself decently is actuallyan act of kindness.
最基本的善良，就是做好自己的角色，承担自己的责任，不给别人添麻烦。做好自己，本身已是一种善良。
Secondly, benefiting others without sacrificing personal interests.
第二层，利人，但不以损己为代价。
Benefit others by doing whatever you can within youpowerand try to make everything convenient to others in terms of wealth, time and energy. The so-called readiness to help other with pleasure means that you feel happier in giving others a helping hand, which is the good interpretation of kindness.
力所能及之处，不要吝啬，无论是财富，是时间，还是精力，尽量与人方便。所谓助人为乐，助人，自己也要快乐，那才是善的题中之意。
Benefitingoneself at thecostof others is the evil. However, kindness does not mean benefiting others at the sacrifice of the personal interests. It is a test of the human nature and in essence an unfoundednotionwithout reason.
损人利己，可谓恶，但也不是说善就要损己利人。这种对人性的考验，本身就是一种缺乏理性的虚妄之想。
Thirdly, seeking the higher unity between benefiting others and benefit oneself .
第三层，实现利人与利己的高度统一。
People devotedly conduct themselves with great efforts and never think of benefiting others, but they show mercyunknowingly. The sun shines brightly on theearth without losing its happiness but others can benefit from it.
一心一意只努力做好自己，从来不曾想过要施惠于人，然而却能行善于无形之中。如阳光普照大地，自己不失其乐，别人也能得惠其中。
We must rationally recognizethat the ultimatebeneficiary of all life contributions is you yourself. So is the mercy shown to others, and this is the human nature.
我们必须理智地认识到，人生一切的付出，最终的受益者都将是自己，行善，也是如此。这就是人性。
It is the most essentially sensibleto be honest in facing the human life. If you can fully understand it, you don’t have to regret for not having become a “Savior”and you won’t be bothered by anxieties, nor shall you blame others for not having sacrificed his interests for the sake ofyours, so you will have less chance being criticized by others.
坦诚面对人性，这本身就是最起码的理智。明白这个道理，既不用懊恼自己没有成为“救世主”，会少些苦恼；也不用抱怨他人没有舍己为人，会少些苛责。
This way, life will be more cool and peaceful so that you can take it easy inyourdaily life. Impart this essential principle to the coming generations and you can find that they can have more honesty and sunshinein their life.
如此，生活就会多一份淡然与从容。将这个道理教给下一代，他们的人生或许就能多点坦诚和阳光。
