What is global citizenship?
The globe contains 195 countries, 19,495 cities, and 7.753 billion people, and with a world that large, it can be difficult to wrap our minds around the concept of global citizenship. However, at SLS, we understand the importance of understanding our world on a larger scale and learning the values of fairness, empathy, and respect for other people, their cultures, and their differences. Brian Swarts, the director of Pepperdine University’s Global Fellows program, stated, “To be a global citizen, you need to be able to both appreciate diversity, be curious about it, and then be willing to use that appreciation to work together for some common goals that we share as humans on a shared planet.”

At SLS, we have incorporated Global Citizenship into our international curriculum, not only as a new subject for our 1st – 9th-grade students but also as a framework for learning, reaching beyond the classroom into our larger community. It is embedded in our international teaching and learning and interwoven into our primary school IBPYP curriculum units of inquiry. Furthermore, our global citizenship education aims to empower our students to play an active role, both locally and globally, in building a more peaceful, tolerant, and inclusive world. It also gives our students opportunities to demonstrate their learning as lifelong learners.

In an increasingly globalized world, international-mindedness is more important than ever before. Those who have an understanding of this globalized world, and share a sense of responsibility for our planet as a whole are considered “global citizens”. With that in mind, developing our students as global citizens has many benefits. Global citizenship helps our students to:

Through our global citizenship education, our students learn how to use their own voice, act responsibly, and take purposeful action. Our students will strive to build a better, more peaceful, tolerant, and inclusive world.
