Longmen Art Projects is thrilled to present Parrots | Ladies | Shanghai – Walasse Ting Color & Ink on Chinese Rice Paper. Following last week’s preview & reception, Parrots | Ladies | Shanghai will open to the public on December 22nd and will run through March 9th, 2024. This exhibition presents the remarkable works of Walasse Ting, a Chinese-American artist and poet who fused Eastern and Western aesthetics and motifs. The exhibition displays his luminous and dynamic depictions of women, parrots, and other animals, created on Chinese rice paper with acrylic paint. This exhibition is in harmony with Ting’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, Walasse Ting: Parrot Jungle, which is currently on view at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida until March 10th, 2024. This is a unique opportunity to see the works of one of the most influential and original artists of the 20th century.
Walasse Ting, an iconic figure bridging Ancient Chinese aesthetics, European avant-garde, and American Pop Art, remains one of the most radical and independent artists of his era. This exhibition offers a vibrant immersion into the artist’s neon-soaked visions, displaying a collection of 15 artworks themed around “Parrots.” Vibrant parrots perch upon the shoulders of emotive ladies, traversing vibrant petals and floral sleeves, and soaring freely in the spring breeze. Ting’s unique fusion of Chinese ink outlines with rich, colorful acrylics opens a gateway to an artistic realm where East meets West in seamless harmony.

About Artist
Walassee Ting
Born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, in 1928, Walasse Ting spent his formative years in Shanghai, where he began his artistic pursuits as a self-taught prodigy. His journey led him to Paris in 1952, where he cultivated friendships within the CoBrA Group before relocating to New York in 1957. Despite his associations with various artistic movements, Ting always maintained an autonomous artistic identity.
In 1990, he established his second studio in Amsterdam, expanding his creative horizons. Ting’s oeuvre evolved dramatically over time; from early abstract expressions in black and white oil paints to embracing vibrant western colors and fluorescents in the late 1960s, heavily influenced by the contemporary pop art movement. His devotion to acrylic painting on rice paper during the 1980s marked a pinnacle in his career, seamlessly merging Eastern and Western cultural motifs.
Walasse Ting departed from the world in Spring 2010, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
